The exhibition Face and Voices of Malta held at the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation centred on the work of Guido Stilon, an amateur Maltese photographer with a unique perspective on Malta. Captured in the 1950s and 1960s when Malta was shifting from a British colony to an independent nation, Guido’s photography explores the urban spectrum of his home city of Valletta and the towns, villages and countryside beyond. His images capture the expansion of industry and post-war economic growth against a backdrop of traditional fishing, farming, lace-making, festa, and landscapes of Malta.

Accompanying these artworks was a documentary on Stilon by Letta Shtohryn, and audiovisual collages of Maltese life in the 20th century, captured in the collections held in the Magna Żmien archive, created by Andrej Vujicic, Timothy Garrett, Robert Farrugia, Jimmy Grima, Yasmin Kuymizakis, and Jess Rymer.

On the evening of the 26 October, a concert held on the stage of the Cultural Foundation Amphitheatre featured Ilħna Mitlufa, comprising Mariele Zammit, veteran għannej Mikiel Cumbo l-Iżgej, father-and-son kitarristi George and Karol Aquilina Ta’ Nofs il-Llejl, and Andrew Alamango.

Organised by the Embassy of Malta in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation, and the Magna Żmien Foundation. Funded by the Cultural Diplomacy Fund of the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Tourism, and Arts Council Malta, with the support of Emirates Airline.
