On the 21st September 2024, a commemorative celebration of 60 years of Maltese Independence was presented at the Taz Palace in Cairo. Organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Malta in Cairo with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Arab Republic of Egypt, Methode Electronics Egypt Ltd and Magna Żmien, this event features an artistic programme which reflects upon Malta’s transition from a colony to an independent state for the first time in history which features a performance, an exhibition and film screening.
One of the highlights in the programme of events includes an exhibition featuring 22 prints by the unique eye of Maltese photographer Guido Stilon. The programme featured a performance by one of Malta’s most renowned bands, *etnika, and a special screening of a documentary directed by Maltese anthropologist Adrian Camilleri, featuring content from Magna Żmien’s archive. Bejn is-Sema u l-Art, which was originally produced by Festivals Malta as a Ritmu Roots Festival commission, reflects upon the life and legacy of one of the islands’ most prominent folk singers: Frans Baldacchino ‘il-Budaj’.
