Guido Stilon was born in Valletta in 1932, living in St Paul Street as a child, before moving to St Christopher Street after the war. Guido’s passion for photography began in the mid 1950s whilst a student at the University of Malta. His friends and family remember him as a quiet, unassuming man, rarely seen without a camera.

Despite never identifying as a professional photographer, he nevertheless had his photos included in numerous publications abroad and featured anonymously in local television programmes. He was awarded several international photography prizes, including Kodak’s The World and its People competition, through which a number of his photographs were displayed at the New York World’s Fair in 1964.

Guido died in 1975, leaving behind a prolific collection of over 6,000 negatives and 5,000 colour slides. In 2018 his family contacted Magna Żmien to preserve his images for future generations. His collection now resides at National Archives Malta. Following an exhibition of his work in 2020, he is now recognised as a nationally significant photographer. Further projects to share his collection are planned.

This image has been graciously licensed by the estate of Guido Stilon to be printed in limited quantities. Sales of this print directly support Magna Żmien’s activities as a community archive.
